Volunteer Tutors

Do you enjoy reading, writing or working with numbers? Would you like to help other adults to develop their skills?

Volunteer Tutors have the opportunity to assist in groups and work with a diverse range of students working on everyday English or number skills.

About volunteering
Volunteers usually work in a small group once a week for two hours during term times. They are expected to prepare work each week which may require up to two hours per week. We ask volunteers to committ themselves to tutoring for one year.

The initial training consists of ten two-hour sessions and covers:
exploring the learning process
different strategies and methods of learning critical thinking
Equal Opportunities
preparation of materials for students

On completion of the initial training there is also continuous in-service training. Volunteer, receive ongoing support from their group tutor.

What do you need to become a volunteer?
good listening skills, sensitivity, empathy and a sense of humour
respect for different cultures, backgrounds, abilities and disabilities
confidence in your own everyday literacy or numeracy
