The City of Edinburgh
Council is committed to removing barriers, and developing strategies to build
an inclusive service that promotes greater integration, equality and opportunities
for learning. Inclusive practice creates opportunities for people to learn together
and value the contribution of everyone. This also helps to change perceptions,
reduce prejudice and promote greater understanding and shared knowledge.
Some learners work in groups which are exclusively for people who share a similar
disability. Others learners join integrated groups where they learn alongside
students who have different learning requirements.

Curriculum
The curriculum is not course or accreditation led. Practice centres on developing
a learner centred approach within the context of adult literacy and numeracy.
The needs, interests and goals of individuals and groups of students are a vital
part of this process.
The service provides flexible and responsive tuition both drawing and building
on the knowledge, understanding and experience of adult students who can learn
at their own pace using their preferred learning styles. This way of working enables
us to value and include everyone.
Accessibility
Accessibility is a key consideration and we aim to run all our groups in accessible
premises. We are currently providing additional tutor support, as well as other
facilities, aids and resources that promote inclusive learning.
Creating
equality, respecting difference
As part of the City of Edinburgh Council, we are committed to increasing equality
of opportunity and addressing the root causes of social and economic exclusion.
Our commitment to inclusion is linked to this policy as we seek to create equality
and respect difference.
