Who was who at the time of Guy Fawkes? by
Gwen
James 6th was the King of Scotland. He became King of England as well in 1603
when Oueen Elizabeth of England died. He is known as King James 1st of England.
James was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566. His mother was Mary, Queen of Scots.
She was a Catholic. There was a lot of trouble between the Catholics and the Protestants
and she was imprisoned. While his mother was in prison James was brought up as
a Protestant. When James was 21 his mother was executed in 1587.
In England Catholics were given a hard time and were not allowed to worship in
their own way. Elizabeth, Queen of England, was a Protestant. When she died James
6th of Scotland was the nearest relative and so he became King of England too.
The Catholics first thought that James would be sympathetic to them because his
mother was Catholic. But very soon he started punishing Catholics for refusing
to go to Church of England services.
