Catholics and Protestants at the time of Guy Fawkes
by Mary
In 1603 James 6th of Scotland became King of England as well, he was known
as James 1st of England.
James' mother was Mary Queen of Scots who was a Catholic. There was a
lot of trouble between the Catholics and Protestants at that time. She
was imprisoned and the boy James was brought up a Protestant. When he
became King of England he also became Head of the Church of England which
was Protestant.
There were three main groups of Christians in the country then.
1. There were those Christians who still looked to the Pope as their head
and they were the Roman Catholics.
2. The Christians in the Church of England accepted the king as their
head but they also made their religion simpler.
3. The third group thought the Anglicans had not made their religion simple
enough. They wanted to get rid of bishops, candles, robes, ceremonies
and things like that. They wanted everything simple and purified and so
these Christians were called the Puritans.
The people expected James to be sympathetic to the Catholics but when
he started to punish them for not worshipping in the Church of England
a gang of Catholics plotted to murder him. This was the Gunpowder Plot.
