An Evening Out

Jeanette and wee Amanda and I went down to Princes Street Gardens on Sunday 6th October 1996. We got there about 4.15pm. The show had already started.
It was the Scot FM Roadshow and the DJ was Robin Galloway. He was talking to the crowd and throwing T shirts and pens to them and handing out mugs. Lots of people rushed to the stage and tried to grab a freebie. I was sitting with Jeanette and my daughter was on my knee. The DJ introduced one of the performers. He said it was the The BT Polkemmet Pipe Band. They played four or five tunes.
Half an hour later the rain was coming down heavy. Dougie MacLean came on next and sang a couple of songs. We asked Amanda if she wanted to go for something to eat. Jeanette said, ‘’Burger King or MacDonald?’’ At Burger KIng Amanda wouldn’t eat her burger because it had sauce on it, but she ate some chips and drank her coke. We asked Amanda if she wanted to go home or stay. She said, “I want to see the pipe man”.
At the park the rain was very heavy.  Everyone was getting wet. The DJ was giving away more things and he introduced the BT Pipe Band again and they played more tunes. I put my daughter on my shoulder and went to the stage. At the stage lots of kids and my daughter were getting pushed. I was frightened she would fall off my shoulder so I moved back a little. The rain had stopped. I saw someone I used to work with at BT. The DJ introduced a band called The Tartan Amoebas. They played good music. The leader of the band played a violin and the pipes. The Tartan Amoebas come from Edinburgh.
Some people got up to dance and Amanda started to dance too.The band took a break and The BT Pipe Band came on again. Half an hour later The Tartan Amoebas came on and played again. People came to dance by the stage. About 7.30pm the band stopped playing and everyone clapped and shouted “More”. Robin Galloway said, “Thank you to all the groups who came on tonight. Thank you for supporting the Marie Curie Cancer Care’’.
He said, “The fireworks are about to start”. Everyone looked up to watch them.
Sparks were falling down and hitting the side of the stage. A woman was hit on the head and back of her coat. Amanda said, “fireworks good, fireworks bad”.
I took my daughter to the stage on my shoulder. The woman on the stage gave a pen to Amanda and a mug to me. Amanda couldn’t stop talking about the fireworks. We all walked to the bus stop and went home. We all enjoyed the evening.
